Ask About New York’s High Schools

This week, Clara Hemphill, whose book series New York City’s Best Schools is regarded as the bible for navigating school choices, will be responding to readers’ questions about the high school admissions process and the myriad choices in the city.

Ms. Hemphill is a writer, editor and public school parent dedicated to informing other parents about New York’s public schools. She is a founding editor of Insideschools.org, a project of Advocates for Children. She is the senior editor at the New School’s Center for New York City Affairs, a public policy research center.

As a reporter and editorial writer for New York Newsday, Ms. Hemphill shared the 1991 Pulitzer Prize for local reporting. As foreign correspondent for The Associated Press and a producer for CBS News based in Rome in the 1980s, she covered the war in Lebanon, the attempted assassination of the pope and numerous Mafia murders. Her columns and op-ed pieces have appeared in The New York Times, The New York Daily News and Newsday.

She lives in Manhattan with her husband, Robert Snyder, and two children.
