'BATTING IT AROUND' WITH JEFFREY LAIKIND
|
Jeffrey Laikind, Liaison to the Alumni Assocation from the HSA Board of Directors
When you ask Board Member Jeffrey Laikind about his dreams for an Alumni Association at HSA, he lights up. His enthusiasm stems directly from his positive experience in re-energizing the Alumni Association of his high school, The Choate School (known since its 1974 merger as Choate Rosemary Hall). “Initially our alumni association was an organization that graduates only heard from once a year – with a letter asking for funds. I told the headmaster at the time that it needed to be an organization that did something. We convened a group of thirty alumni, and I headed a committee of three to write the bylaws. We defined what we felt an alumni association should do, and I believe that the same three priorities exist today for The Harlem School of the Arts’ Alumni Association.”
What are the three fundamental responsibilities of an Alumni Association according to our Board Liaison to the HSA Alumni Association? 1) To support the program of the School in any way it can; 2) To connect alumni to alumni by creating a social network; 3) To connect the alumni to the students in the School in order to support their long-term thinking and goals.
His Choate Alumni Association now sends graduates into the field for outreach and to help staff events like a phone-a-thon. The possibility of reviving the HSA radiothon also captures his interest, as he initiated the first radiothon to benefit an arts institution when he was on the Board of Directors of the New York City Opera back in the 1970s.
Suburban Wallingford, Connecticut may seem a long way from urban Harlem, New York, but Mr. Laikind has been able to transfer his commitment to student mentoring to Upper Manhattan through Street Squash which he co-founded and served as the Chairman of the Board during its formative years. (He’s still an active board member and squash player to this day!) We're not writing about the Thanksgiving vegetable, but the indoor racket sport played around the world. Street Squash is located on 115th Street and Lenox Avenue and serves roughly the same geographic area as the Harlem School of the Arts. It serves a similar age population and is an after school program. “Students don’t have to be great squash players, or great students to participate in Street Squash. However, they do have to want to be there and take advantage of the resources we offer them – it’s a commitment,” stressed Mr. Laikind.
“Ultimately I want to help HSA provide a support system for our students, both while they’re at the School and later when they continue on in their studies. If they run into a problem in their future studies, I want them to come back to us knowing that we’ll help and support them.”
Jeffrey Laikind and the Board of Directors of The Harlem School of the Arts have great confidence in the newly appointed President of the Alumni Association, Fred Darden. “Fred is now ex-officio on the Board of Directors. His voice is being heard and he has the Board’s complete support to build the Association over time. This is not a short-term project. We expect the Alumni Association under Fred Darden to be creative and helpful, and work very closely with the management of the School for the foreseeable future. I know readers will look forward to hearing directly from Fred Darden with his vision in the New Year.”
If you are interested in connecting to former classmates and participating in The Harlem School of the Arts Alumni Association, please e-mail: alumni@harlemschoolofthearts.org.

VISUAL ARTS YASHUA KLOS
|
An In Depth Interview with Visual Artist Yashua Klos Meeting with Yashua Klos is a unique experience. He looks more like an urban easy-going man than a passionate visual artist. After talking with him for just two minutes discussing art, that image is erased and replaced with a Chicago breed artist who does not buy into the "starving artist" theory. He's not only hardworking and driven but also inspiring and charismatic.
Due to technical difficulties the above video did not play in last week's Visual Arts eblast. Please meet HSA's Visual Arts instructor Yashua Klos. If you are having trouble view the above video please view on HSA's YouTube page by clicking here.
