New York Civil Liberties Union: From the Desk of Donna Lieberman

We did it!

Thanks to three years of hard work and the help of NYCLU members like you who sent hundreds of faxes to lawmakers, the New York City Council has unanimously passed the Student Safety Act - the country's most comprehensive local reporting
Law on student discipline and arrests. With the Student Safety Act on the books, we will finally get a look at what the police are doing in our schools.

For too long, the Bloomberg administration has cherry-picked data to paint the
Rosiest possible picture of its school safety polices. The Student Safety Act will end the dog and pony show by shining a bright light on the real impact of harsh suspension practices and unchecked policing on our children and schools.

Using this information, we'll work with lawmakers, parents, students and educators to revamp school safety and discipline polices so that all the city's children have equal educational opportunities. Smarter policies will increase the city's graduation rate, narrow the achievement gap and put professional educators, not the cops, in charge of enforcing school discipline.

The New York Times hailed the passage of the Student Safety Act with a Christmas Day editorial. As always, we owe our success to you - our loyal supporters. Without you, none of this work would happen.

You are the NYCLU. And we also thank the member organizations of the Student Safety Coalition, who have worked tirelessly for the past three years to make the Student Safety Act the law of New York City.

Thank you for all that you do,

Donna Lieberman
