Helpers Sought For Elevator Mechanics

Deadline March 23 For June 19 Exam With $60 Filing Fee

Need Experience or Classes For $26-Per-Hour Jobs At Various Agencies

Filing is open through March 23 for an exam for Elevator Mechanic’s Helper for various city agencies.

The exam is scheduled for June 19. The current minimum salary is $25.76 per hour, according to the Notice of Exam from the Department of Citywide Administrative Services. The filing fee is $60.

To qualify, candidates must have one of the following: three years of experience in maintenance, repair and installation of passenger or freight elevators; at least two years’ experience with elevators plus at least 600 hours of training in a trade school or vocational high school approved by any state; or completion of the career ladder training program for elevator mechanic’s helpers sponsored by the city Housing Authority. Applicants also need a valid New York State driver’s license.

Key Tasks

Job duties include assisting in the maintenance and repair of electrically and/or hydraulically powered passenger and/or freight elevators while under direct supervision. The helpers assist elevator mechanics in making mechanical and electrical repairs and adjustments to the components of passenger and freight elevators, which include cables, sheaves, glands, motors, generators, starters, relays and controls, brakes, solenoids, and safeties. They make routine inspections of elevator equipment in a preventive maintenance program; use the tools and instruments essential to elevator maintenance and repair work; clean work areas; hand tools and equipment to Elevator Mechanics who are making repairs; drive a motor vehicle; and perform related work.

Physical activities include climbing ladders and elevator shafts; moving heavy elevator parts; carrying heavy tool boxes; crawling and working in narrow spaces; and working in the vicinity of live electrical circuits and moving elevators.

What Test Covers

Candidates must score at least 70 percent on the multiple-choice test. It will include questions on the operation, maintenance, and repair of elevator safeties, elevator control devices and motor generator equipment; reading of electrical drawings; electrical instruments and equipment used in testing; basic arithmetic calculations; elevator components and tools; and safe operating procedures. Testtakers may use hand-held battery or solar calculators.

Candidates who meet the education and experience requirements and pass the test will be placed in final score order on an eligible list. All will be notified by mail of their test results. Those who meet all requirements and conditions will be considered for appointment when their name is reached on the eligible list.

If hired, a candidate may need to become a resident of New York City within 90 days of appointment. Check with the hiring agency to see whether residency is required.
