Fw: Dispose of Prescription Drugs on October 26

Saturday, October 26 is National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. Between 10:00am and 2:00pm, you can bring your unwanted prescription drugs or over-the-counter medicines to a collection site near you.

Enter your ZIP code to find your nearest collection site.

Properly disposing of medicines is important to human health and the environment. Here are a few tips from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency:

  • Don't flush medicines down the toilet or pour them down the drain. Doing so could affect drinking water sources.
  • Don't throw medicines directly in the trash. Doing so could lead to the poisoning of a child or pet, or drug abuse by a teen or adult.
  • Do find out how to properly dispose of medicines (PDF).

"TEY"
Alain Gomis, Senegal, 2012, 86m

Today is the last day of Satché's life. He knows this to be true even though he is strong and healthy. Nonetheless Satché (played by American actor-musician Saül Williams) accepts his imminent death. Walking through the streets of his home town in Senegal he takes in the sites of his past as if he were looking at them for the last time: his parents' house, his first love, the friends of his youth, his wife and children. Time and again he hears the same reproach: why didn't he stay in America, where he would have a future? Satché encounters his final moments full of fear but also with a sense of joy. In his film, director Alain Gomis takes a well-worn topic in Senegalese cinema and turns it on its head: unlike other films, many of which choose to focus on emigration and neo-colonialism, Gomis' work instead tells the story of a man who leaves America to return to the land of his birth. Best fried chicken in the city

Time to get your finger lickin' on. Fork in the Road takes on the sweet task of seeking out the best fried chicken in the city. It's a tough contest, but they manage to narrow it down to 10 moist, juicy, crispy-skinned winners. The list includes the bird at The Redhead (349 East 13th Street), with its buttermilk brine and greaseless coating; Amy Ruth's (113 West 116th Street) choice of dark or white meat smothered in oregano-rich brown gravy and served with the optional waffle; BonChon (325 Fifth Avenue) for its Korean fried chicken with either sweet soy-garlic or spicy chili glaze; The Commodore (366 Metropolitan Avenue, Brooklyn), where you get three mammoth thighs with cups of sweet, peppery vinegar sauce; and Mitchell's Soul Food (617A Vanderbilt Avenue, Brooklyn) for its black pepper-heavy batter that hasn't changed since 1978. Harlem Assault Turns Deadly For Transgender Victim

After spending nearly five days on a ventilator, transgender woman Islan Nettles died of her injuries following an assault near 148th Street and Eighth Avenue in Harlem last Saturday. While out with a friend over the weekend, 21-year-old Nettles began arguing with a group of men, one of whom police said made anti-gay remarks upon learning the victims were transgender. That's when a fight broke out and resulted in Nettles being rushed to the hospital. So far, NBC New York reports that a 20-year-old man was arrested in this investigation — which the NYPD considers a possible hate crime — though his role in Saturday night's altercation "was not immediately clear." DNA Info writes that the man "was initially charged with misdemeanor assault, but cops said they expected to upgrade the charges on Friday." Nettles, who also used the names Vaughn Nettles and Alon Nettles, planned to start a career in fashion and previously interned at Ay' Medici, a Harlem design house, according to her LinkedIn page. The attack is the latest in New York City's alarming uptick in hate crimes this summer. Read more posts by Delia Paunescu Filed Under: hate crimes ,transgender ,Harlem ,horrible things ,nypd
