Netflix Bends To Warner Bros., Won't Rent DVDs For 28 Days After They Go On Sale

Netflix Bends To Warner Bros., Won't Rent DVDs For 28 Days After They Go On Sale

Dan Frommer

This will please the movie industry: Netflix has agreed to a 28-day window before it rents Warner Bros. DVDs and Blu-ray discs after they go on sale. The idea is that this will allow Warner Bros. to sell more discs, which is more lucrative than rentals.

According to the announcement, 75% of DVD sellthrough occurs in the first four weeks of sales, so that's what the movie companies are hoping to boost.

How much will it hurt Netflix?

Maybe only a little, because Netflix does not rely on new releases as much as movie stores like Blockbuster and kiosks like Redbox. But it's still probably not a direction that Netflix boss Reed Hastings is crazy about.

Private High School Coming to Greenwich Village

Private High School Coming to Greenwich Village

Greenwich Village will soon have a new private high school.

Grace Church School, a private elementary school in Greenwich Village with 412 students in kindergarten through eighth grade, announced Tuesday that it plans to expand with a $25 million high school opening in September 2012.

The high school will be located in leased space on the first and second floors of 38-50 Cooper Square, which is currently used by New York University for classroom space. The high school will start with up to 80 ninth-grade students, and add a grade each year for a total of up to 320 students by 2016. It will be supported through fund-raising and tuition, which is expected to be about $35,000 a year.

“We have seen a strong and growing demand for more high school seats,” said George Davison, the head of school at Grace Church.

Grace Church is planning to offer financial aid to about one quarter of the students. Applications will be accepted in the fall of 2011.

The Real Deal looks at how accurate experts were in their predictions for 2009

Don Capoccia managing principal, BFC Partners:
"Those properties that are in fringe neighborhoods are not going to do as well [in the downturn]."
Capoccia's prediction proved mostly true. In Manhattan, Harlem condos were "in deep doo-doo" by the middle of the year, according to veteran Harlem broker Willie Suggs. The southern part of Harlem saw its average price per square foot on residential properties drop by approximately $100 to $200, from $800 during the pre-recession high, according to Stephen Kliegerman, executive director of development marketing at Halstead Property. The neighborhood was home to headline-grabbing bad news in 2009, with Riverton Apartments ranking as the biggest new commercial mortgage delinquency in the U.S. in November, and the famed Bailey Mansion selling at 90 percent below its original asking price.
'In the Heights' composer, novelist, artist to lead NYC's 3 Kings Day Parade

NEW YORK (AP) — A Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist, a Broadway composer and an influential artist will lead New York City's festive Three Kings Day Parade today.

Thousands of children are expected to march through Manhattan's East Harlem neighborhood to celebrate Three Kings Day, also called Epiphany, the last official day of the Christmas season.

The day celebrates the biblical journey of the three kings to Bethlehem who brought the baby Jesus gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.

The honorary three kings are novelist Oscar Hijuelos, composer and lyricist Lin-Manuel Miranda, of the musical "In the Heights," and artist Raphael Montanez Ortiz, a founder of El Museo del Barrio, the parade's organizer.

No Longer Majority Black, Harlem Is in Transition

No Longer Majority Black, Harlem Is in Transition

For nearly a century, Harlem has been synonymous with black urban America. Given its magnetic and growing appeal to younger black professionals and its historic residential enclaves and cultural institutions, the neighborhood’s reputation as the capital of black America seems unlikely to change soon.

But the neighborhood is in the midst of a profound and accelerating shift. In greater Harlem, which runs river to river, and from East 96th Street and West 106th Street to West 155th Street, blacks are no longer a majority of the population — a shift that actually occurred a decade ago, but was largely overlooked.

By 2008, their share had declined to 4 in 10 residents. Since 2000, central Harlem’s population has grown more than in any other decade since the 1940s, to 126,000 from 109,000, but its black population — about 77,000 in central Harlem and about twice that in greater Harlem — is smaller than at any time since the 1920s.

Alleged Rapist Saw Similar Rape Charge Dropped Last Year

An unidentified 45-year-old woman claims Taurean Williams, 25, approached her on New Year's Day in Upper Manhattan and displayed a badge, telling her he was a police detective who needed to bring her to a local station to check whether there were any warrants out for her arrest. Instead, he allegedly pulled a gun on her and raped her on the rooftop of a building at 550 West 153rd Street. Now police say Williams (MySpace?) was also arrested for raping a teenager on the same rooftop in October—but prosecutors dropped the charge.

Detectives from the Special Victims Unit recognized similarities between the rapes, and presented the most recent victim with photos, one of which included Williams, whom she identified. Police say Williams was previously arrested on October 23rd, on charges that he raped and sodomized a 17-year-old girl on the same rooftop.

The Family Bible Is a Guest for the Oath, but Not a Participant

A few hours before the inauguration on Friday, the mayor’s aides distributed an exhaustive description of the Bible that Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg would use to take the oath of office.

It belongs to his mother, Charlotte. It was printed in 1909 by the Canal Street Hebrew Publishing Company in Manhattan. Its translator? Isaac Leeser.

With so much attention paid to the book’s origin, it was a wonder that nobody reminded the mayor to place his hand on it as he was sworn in.

As Mr. Bloomberg recited the oath of office, he held his right hand in the air, and dropped his left hand to his side. The Bloomberg family Bible, held by his two daughters, Emma and Georgina, hovered, conspicuously handless.

NY1 wife abuser Carter now beats himself up

Dominic Carter has hit rock bottom.

Two months after the former NY1 political anchor was found guilty of attempted assault for beating, choking and kicking his wife, he spends his days worrying about how to pay his mortgage and agonizing over "how fast things got out of control."

"I don't set the alarm anymore," Carter said in a tearful interview, his first since the attack on his wife was revealed by The Post two months ago. "I wake up. I sit around the house. I read the papers, watch a movie.

"Sometimes I cry a lot, but I try not to do it around my kids . . . I've had time to reflect on my life -- and on how I dropped the ball as a man.

City flier 'smacks' of lunacy

Here's the latest smack on taxpayers.

The city spent $32,000 on 70,000 fliers that tell you how to shoot heroin, complete with detailed tips on prepping the dope and injecting it into your arm.

The Health Department handout has outraged New York's top drug prosecutors and abuse experts.

"It's basically step-by- step instruction on how to inject a poison," said John Gilbride, who heads the Drug Enforcement Administration's New York office.

"It's sick," said City Council member Peter Vallone Jr. (D-Queens)

"Foolish," said Columbia University drug researcher and treatment expert Dr. Herbert Kleber.

The 16-page pamphlet features seven comics-like illustrations and offers dope fiends such useful advice as "Warm your body (jump up and down) to show your veins," and "Find the vein before you try to inject."

It even encourages addicts to keep jabbing if their needles miss the mark.

RETRO Louis Mendes with his specially modified camera.

FORGET what your parents told you: money does grow on trees. Well, at least for the street photographers who work the crowds around the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree, it does. With digital cameras and ink-jet printers powered by car batteries, they churn out images at about $10 a pop.

Arrivistes, as far as Louis Mendes is concerned. Where is the skill in setting a camera to “automatic” and pushing a button? Where is the permanence in a shot printed with no-name ink on no-name paper? Where is the craft?

In his hands. Mr. Mendes works the same crowds — and parades, graduations and concerts — cradling like a piece of sculpture a vintage Speed Graphic camera outfitted with two flash units and a Polaroid back.

It
didn't take long. 8 years--tops. Thanks to Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, Niggers
are back to being bogeymen of the world. That's right: Back to Black. What a
relief it was for many Niggers--post Sept. 11, 2001: In one fell swoop, 19
hijackers had radically lifted the red-dot from the heads of Niggers and
planted it on anyone with a middle-eastern accent--especially those donning
kufis. For a while, speaking Arabic was in and of itself a terrorism
predilection. Reading the Qu'ran? Why, that was downright a tell-tale detailing
a terrorist mind at work.
Well,
the grace period is over. Operation "Niggers Are Potential Terrorists" is back in full effect. And not just any
kind of Niggers--the African-Jungle-Banana-Niggers.
