Fw: Free Apps with Information You Can Use

Free Apps with Information You Can Use

It seems there is an app or mobile site available for almost anything these days, but sometimes all you really want is trusted information on important things happening around you, such as the economy, your health or other current events. USA.gov provides free government apps and mobile sites in one Mobile Apps Gallery, so you can easily find and download what you're looking for. Some of the newest apps and mobile sites include:

  • 52 Weeks for Women's Health: This app, created by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), includes 52 alphabetical health topics, one for each week of the year. The app promotes a healthy lifestyle and includes practical tips for women to use in their everyday lives. You can also monitor your personal health by tracking medicines, allergies and more.
  • America's Economy: If you're interested in learning more about the American economy, this app is for you. The U.S. Census Bureau has compiled updates and information from across the government that overviews statistics that measure the health of the U.S. economy in areas such as manufacturing, employment, international trade and many more. You can also check to see if an area you're interested in has gone up or down since the previous post.
  • FBI.gov Mobile: The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has launched its first mobile site to help you access their information on the go. Browse their site with the easy to use search function or view the latest news through their rotating slider. Some of the most popular information the FBI shares includes the Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list, crime stats, and background check information.
  • Presidential Documents App: Through the joint forces of the Government Printing Office (GPO) and the National Archives' Office of the Federal Register (OFR) you can find out what public activities the President is up to every day. With user-friendly search capabilities, you can access executive orders, speeches, nominations submitted to the Senate, official White House announcements and more.

HEARD AROUND TOWN

HEARD AROUND TOWN:

* The New York City Council Districting Commission voted on the final map of the new City Council district lines on Thursday, but for Councilwoman Melissa Mark-Viverito, the final product was far from satisfactory. Mark-Viverito opposed the proposed district maps released in October that fragmented the East Harlem section of her district and excluded the iconic landmark marketplace La Marqueta. The final map now includes La Marqueta in the district, but cuts out up to 35 blocks of East Harlem—a community with a large Hispanic population—and places roughly half of her district in the Bronx. "[The Commission] didn't maintain the integrity of the district, and that's what people were asking for at the hearing," Mark-Viverito said. "The argument I keep hearing [for changing her district] is borough equity. The Bronx, because of population growth, deserves better representation. But the [city] charter does not speak anything about borough equity, it's supposed to cause the least destruction possible and still maintain the communities of interest." Mark-Viverito added that she was unsure if there was enough of a movement within the City Council for a majority vote against the new maps, but said she would appeal personally to City Council Speaker Christine Quinn.

* Thousands of NYCHA public housing residents are still without power, hot water, or heat, but residents will still have to pay rent until January when they will receive a credit, the Daily News writes: http://nydn.us/RUrXo9

* Two fundraisers for New York City Comptroller and mayoral candidate John Liu had their motions to dismiss a case against them for steering illegal contributions to Liu's campaign denied by a federal judge, the New York Post reports: http://bit.ly/RzmaVm

Fw: Macy's: Dump Donald Trump

Below is an email from Angelo Carusone, a MoveOn member who created a petition on SignOn.org, the nonprofit site that allows anyone to start their own online petition. If you have concerns or feedback about this petition, click here.

Dear MoveOn member,

Macy's has a special deal with Donald Trump to sell his clothing line and fragrance. They have also honored Trump with major events at the Macy's Herald Square location, and they sometimes feature Trump in ads in order to celebrate the "magic of Macy's."

For years Donald Trump has engaged in especially unpleasant, nasty, and despicable behavior, including stoking racist conspiracy theories about President Obama's birth certificate.

Click here to tell Macy's to Dump Donald Trump.

I'll personally deliver the petition to Macy's headquarters before the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade to make sure it gets maximum attention.

Macy's boasts about its social responsibility policy, which reads:

There is no shortage of talk about the obligation of public companies to be socially responsible to the people and communities where they do business. At Macy's, Inc., we hold those same beliefs—along with a belief that actions speak louder than words when it comes to helping tackle some of the toughest problems facing us today.

Indeed, Macy's. Actions speak louder than words. So act now, and dump Trump.

To ask Macy's to do the right thing, I created a petition on SignOn.org to Macy's President, CEO, and Chairman of the Board, Terry Lundgren, which says:

Macy's: Donald Trump does not reflect the "magic of Macy's." We urge you to sever ties with him. Macy's says it has a strong obligation to be "socially responsible" and that "actions speak louder than words." Indeed. It's time to act.

Click here to add your name to this petition, and then pass it along to your friends.

Thanks!

–Angelo Carusone

Election Day

Election Day and Presidents

We've made this month, named for the old ninth (novem) month in the Roman calendar, into a highly social time of community suppers and potluck dinners, feasts of thanksgiving, and general elections.

November 6—Election Day (U.S.)
By an act of Congress in 1845, the first Tuesday following the first Monday in November was designated Election Day. This year, as Americans elect their next president, we thought we'd share this interesting fact about the title of "President":

It seems impossible to think of our chief executive as anything but "the President," but in 1789 John Adams had other ideas. After George Washington was unanimously elected to be the nation's first leader, Congress had to decide on his title. When "The President of the United States" was suggested, Vice President–Elect John Adams disagreed, saying that the title was not dignified enough—after all, he argued, even fire companies and cricket clubs had presidents. Instead, he believed that the leader of the United States needed a grander title, and humbly suggested "His Most Benign Highness." His peers, including George Washington himself, no doubt thought that Adams's grandiose suggestion was too reminiscent of the titles of English royalty, and insisted on the more down-to-earth "The President of the United States of America."

Sincerely,
The Old Farmer's Almanac

P.S. Forward this email message to a friend. It's an easy way to share something "useful with a pleasant degree of humor"!

President Obama Mocked As A Runaway Slave?

Pro-Romney Cartoon in Fox News Mogul's Tabloid Might As Well Have Been Signed By The KKK Imperial Wizard

SEE ATTACHMENT FOR PHOTOS
Cartoon recently published by New York Post - [Click to Enlarge]

Nationwide (October 31, 2012) -- Fox News mogul Rupert Murdoch's New York Post published last week what some are calling the most profoundly disrespectful and racist cartoon ever about President Obama. The cartoon depicts an angry white man on horseback (Mitt Romney) chasing down a terrified skinny black man fleeing on foot (President Obama) - and the Romney figure is aiming an assault rifle and attached bayonet at the Obama figure's backside.

"The cartoon clearly evokes an image from the Old South of an overseer or slave catcher chasing down a runaway slave," says a report by two interpreters of code language and political cartoons at www.lyndonlarouchewatch.org/obama-KKK-new-york-post.htm

"Don't believe the Post if they claim this is just payback satire on the President's quip about horses and bayonets that exposed Romney's ignorance of defense issues," said Dennis King, one of the authors of the report, referring to the final Presidential campaign debate on Oct. 22. "This goes way, way beyond satire. For one thing, Obama's quip didn't refer to assault rifles or to using horses to chase down black people. The dog whistle in this cartoon is so loud that anyone can hear it if they aren't in deep denial."

The report said that the Post cartoon was an example of "the knee-jerk hatred of Obama by so many Republicans [that] goes back to group fantasies of the Rebellious Slave, or in this case of the uppity educated n___, who must be put back in his place."

The cartoonist, Sean Delonas, was accused of racism in 2009 when one of his cartoons depicted a rabid chimpanzee dying on a sidewalk after being shot by New York cops. The caption strongly implied that the chimp was meant to represent President Obama. The Post said it was sorry people were offended, but never fully apologized. (Both cartoons are included with the report.)

Mr. King is a journalist who has written extensively on coded forms of bigotry. His co-author of the report, Geraldine Pauling, is an independent scholar and long-time member of the International Psychohistorical Association, which is noted for its analyses of political cartoons.
